IBAADAT: THE REASON BEHIND OUR EXISTENCE
Knowing the secret and the purpose of your existence is the foundation of everything, and we have been told by the Noble Qur’an that the reason for our existence is to worship Allah Most High, and were it not for this evidence, it could have been a controversial matter. Allah Most High says:
(I have only created Jinns and men, that they may serve Me.) [Surat Al Dhariyat, ayah 56]
MEANING OF IBAADAT:
“Al-‘Ibaadah is a comprehensive term covering everything that Allaah loves and is pleased with – whether saying, or actions, outward and inward.” [Majmoo’ul-Fataawaa (10/149)]
Imaam al-Qurtubee (rahimahullaah) – said:
“The root of ‘ibaadah is humility and submissiveness. The various duties that have been prescribed upon the people are called ‘ibaadaat (acts of worship), since what is required is that these acts of worship must be done with humility and submissiveness to Allaah – the Most High.” [Al-Jaami’ li-Ahkaamil-Qur’aan (1/225), and (17/56) of al-Qurtubee]
`Ibadah (act of worship) is an Arabic word derived from `abd (a slave) and it means submission. It portrays that God is your Master and you are His slave and whatever a slave does in obedience to and for the pleasure of his Master is `ibadah. The Islamic concept of `ibadah is very wide.
In short, all your activities and your entire life are `ibadah if they are in accordance with the law of God, and your heart is filled with His fear, and your ultimate objective in undertaking all theses activities is to seek the pleasure of God.
CONDITIONS FOR IBAADAT
Ibaadat in Islam must meet two conditions:
First: Following what Allah (S.W.T.) has legislated and what His messenger has called for, in commands, in prohibitions, in halal and in haram. This is what represents the obedience and submission to Allah (S.W.T.).
Second: Following what Allah (S.W.T.) has legislated must be coming from a heart full of love to Allah, The Most High.
The concept of “ibadah” that Allah (S.W.T.) has created man for, and made it his purpose in life, and his mission on earth; is a comprehensive and complete concept that encompasses all aspects of man’s life.
ACTIONS THAT SOME PEOPLE MAY CONSIDER AS ‘IBAADAT’ CAN BE REJECTED
the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said:
“He who does something which is not according to what we (i.e., the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam and his companions) are upon, then it is rejected (by Allaah)” (Muslim).”
Lets strive to follow the words of our beloved prophet, Muhammad (saw) and achieve our purpose!
